Huon transmission line replacement

About the project

Transmission services to areas south of Huonville and Electrona will receive a significant boost with the construction of a new 16-kilometre 110 kV line between the Knights Road and the Electrona substations. It will replace an existing transmission line which, after nearly 70 years in service, is nearing the end of its useful life. The new line is being constructed using aluminium conductors on steel pole support structures to resist the effects of bushfires and severe climatic conditions. It occupies the same land corridor as the old line which is being dismantled as work progresses. An optical fibre ground wire will be attached to the top of the poles. When completed, the work is expected to cost about $12 million.

The benefits

The new line with a nominal capacity of 46 MW, more than twice the capacity of the existing line, will significantly improving transmission services to areas south of Huonville. The installation of optical fibre will improve communications and protection capabilities between the Knights Road and Electrona substations, as well as providing lightning protection for the line.

Completion date

The new line is expected to be in operation by the end of 2011.
