About the project
This project provides for the replacement of two 220/110kV 90MVA transformers at the Burnie substation with a single, new 200 MVA transformer. The existing network transformers are in poor condition and prone to failure. The work also includes installing and replacing a number of assets including a 110 kV circuit breaker, which is unreliable and in need of frequent maintenance, as well as protection and control equipment. A new system network transformer will be purchased as a spare. The estimated total cost of the project is $13.5 million.
The benefits
When completed, the project will overcome a number of design deficiencies that increase susceptibility to a major failure and improve an area of weakness in the transmission system. That means customers can be guaranteed a more secure and reliable service.
Completion date
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010.
