About the project
Storage can be a problem for most households but when you’re an electricity transmission company carrying millions of dollars worth of stock equipment for substations, transmission lines and telecommunications it and be a major headache. Our solution was to construct a new $7 million facility in the Hobart suburb of Bridgewater, while maintaining satellite stores at Burnie, Palmerston and Trevallyn substations to ensure a rapid Statewide response in emergencies.
The 97 metre long, 53 metre wide equipment store at Bridgewater was specially designed to provide an internal space free of pillars or support structures. The roof is supported by external steel structures on, a simple yet innovative design which also enables the building to be extended.
The design is friendly to the environment, collecting water from the roof for use in flushing toilets and irrigating plants. Perimeter high level glazing ensures there is plenty of natural light and truck wash facilities on site prevent the spread of unwanted plant species and diseases while bunding in the building takes care of any oil leaks.
The benefits
The facility ensures we have enough spare equipment on hand for emergencies and its location on land we already owned at Bridgewater helped keep costs down whileimproving efficiency by taking advantage of the nearby Brighton transport interchange road network.
Completion date
The building came in under budget and on time, officially opening for business in December 2009.
