Palmerston Substation upgrade

About the project

The $12 million overhaul of equipment at the Palmerston Substation has provided a new lease on life for this important facility. Palmerston is an integral part of the 220 kV system, connecting our transmission services between the north and south of the State. The redevelopment involved the replacement of the 22 kV switchgear, a 110/22 kV power transformer and the 220 kV equipment.

In addition, a supervisory control and data acquisition) SCADA system was installed and protection and control systems and lightning protection equipment were also upgraded.

The benefits

Risks associated with ageing equipment have been addressed and the transmission system linking the north and south of the State has been strengthened. The installation of the SCADA system has enhanced efficiency by improving communications between the Palmerston Substation and our central network and control system.

Completion date

Work on the modernisation project was completed in 2008.
