Mowbray Substation development

About the project

The $11 million project to build Mowbray Substation and install the 110 kV transmission line from Trevallyn Substation took two years to complete. The substation comprises a 110/22 kV transformer, a 110 kV circuit breaker, 22 kV switchgear and associated protection and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) equipment. The 110 kV transmission line from Trevallyn Substation extends for three kilometres, including a 2.3 kilometre underground cable. It crosses the Tamar River using existing distribution line towers which were modified to carry 110 kV transmission lines.

Construction of Mowbray Substation has provided distribution company, Aurora Energy, with an additional five 22 kV connection points to its distribution system.

The benefits

The project has improved the reliability of the electricity supply to the city of Launceston and strengthened an area of weakness in the transmission system. It also has provided greater flexibility in managing the load at our other substations which supply the greater Launceston area.

Completion date

The substation was commissioned in 2006 after a two-year construction period.
