Hadspen Substation development

About the project

Construction of the $20 million Hadspen Substation near Launceston in northern Tasmania was one of the first projects to be completed in our first year of operations. The substation, which was constructed by Enerserve, a subsidiary of Energy Australia, is vital in maintaining a secure electricity supply to Launceston and the north-east region. It transforms electricity from 220 kV to 110 kV and when completed it increased the number of 110 kV circuits supplying the region from two to six. The successful completion of the project earned Enerserve an award for excellence from the National Electrical and Communications Association (NSW division) in 1999.

The benefits

The development of Hadspen reduced Launceston’s reliance on Trevallyn Power Station and lowered the risk of extended interruptions to the power supply. It also meant that the city was no longer reliant on the single 220 kV supply point at Palmerston. It has been a major contributor to improving supply reliability to customers in Launceston and the north-east of the State.

Completion date

Hadspen Substation was commissioned in May 1999 after an 18-month construction program.
