Electrona Substation redevelopment

About the project

This extensive project was initiated to meet the increasing demand for electricity in a number of suburbs south of Hobart. Essentially it meant the construction of a new substation within the existing substation boundary. It contains two transformers, a new 11,000 volt indoor switchboard and eight connections to Aurora’s distribution system. A new supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) and two capacitor banks were also installed. The redevelopment was carried out at a cost of $7 million.

The benefits

By providing a more reliable and secure transmission system, there has been a significant improvement to distribution electricity services in the Kingston, Blackmans Bay and Channel areas of southern Tasmania. The work has strengthened an area of weakness in the transmission system and enabled the transfer of some of the load from the Kingston Substation, which was nearing capacity.

Completion date

The project was completed in 2008.
